The HOPE Framework’s focus on promoting access to positive childhood experiences (PCEs), which all ages need to thrive, makes it relevant across our lifespan, especially for emerging young adults. The transition into university life can be disrupting and challenging for many students, and many lose access to the positive experiences that they previously relied on, such as friendships or mentors.
PCEs must continue to be accessible to students as they integrate into the SDSU community. By promoting access to positive experiences throughout university life, the HOPE framework offers a potential strategy to counter the negative consequences of ACEs and foster healthier outcomes for students.
SPI is passionate about bringing the HOPE framework to San Diego State University (SDSU) and expanding its application outside of childhood to college students. We believe that HOPE will be a unifying umbrella for all the initiatives that currently exist on SDSU’s campus. We also believe that HOPE will identify the areas that need to be strengthened.
“Integrating the HOPE framework into SDSU’s current well-being support system will connect and inspire the university at a broad level and allow for continued opportunity for improvements to the holistic health of student, faculty, and staff.”
Dean Steven Hooker, College of Health and Human Services

The SDSU HOPE Guide Team is made up of SDSU students, staff/faculty, and community partners. This group provides guidance and approval for all HOPE at SDSU activities and informs task teams associated with all aspects of the project, including the HOPE Student Alliance and Pilot Projects.
HOPE Student Alliance
Made up of SDSU students, interns, and recent alumni, the HOPE Student Alliance welcomes any and all students interested in supporting the efforts of promoting HOPE at the university. This includes working across different colleges/departments to develop HOPE activates and tools to be used by all students to support their wellbeing at SDSU.
Below you will find the vision, mission, next steps, and timeline for this project.
Vision
To establish SDSU as the first Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE) Informed University in the country, where the environment offers equitable access to a range of positive experiences that foster a sense of belonging, mattering, physical and psychological safety, individual growth, and dignity at a comprehensive level. We are committed to collaboratively repairing harm where it occurs and cultivating inner strength and resilience in and with students. We desire to create a campus culture where everyone can show up on campus as their authentic self and have access to opportunities for growth. We imagine HOPE spreading organically within and throughout academic, personal/family, and professional communities on campus for generations to come.
