The Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE) Framework was developed by Dr. Robert (“Bob”) Sege at Tufts University Medical Center and is a strengths-based, trauma informed approach to increasing wellness based on the research of Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs).
PCEs (as well as positive experiences later in life) have shown significant capacity to mitigate the impact of toxic stress on children and families. Early in life, they allow children to form strong relationships and meaningful connections, cultivate positive self-image and self-worth, experience a sense of belonging, and build skills to cope with stress in healthy ways. Similar age-appropriate impacts can be seen across the lifespan.
The HOPE framework has four evidence-based building blocks which include Relationships, Environment, Engagement, and Emotional Growth. The Social Policy Institute (SPI) is passionate about promoting HOPE across the lifespan. This graphic illustrates how the HOPE framework’s building blocks can lead to positive outcomes whether it is for a child who is building a toy castle, a student who is beginning to build a family and career, or an older adult who is building a legacy.
SPI is taking action in three distinct areas to increase the spread of HOPE for all ages and stages of life.
-
HOPE at San Diego State University: Students experience challenges throughout their academic career and often require a wide range of wellness resources in order to thrive and grow. The HOPE framework provides a unified umbrella to center positive experiences throughout all areas of student involvement on campus.
-
San Diego HOPE Training Hub: In partnership with the HOPE National Resource Center’s HOPE training programs, SPI and the YMCA of San Diego are certified to provide HOPE Introductory Training and the more comprehensive HOPE 101 training. YMCA will be the local provider of the HOPE Train the Facilitator training through September, at which time it will transition to SPI.
-
HOPE for Older Adults: As the population of older adults continues to grow, it is increasingly vital to ensure they have regular access to positive experiences that support their mental, emotional, and physical well-being to foster a healthier and connected aging population.
