Faith-based Leaders and Behavioral Health Professionals: SHI and SPI Partner to Increase Well-being Together
Two out of three people in crisis or distress seek support from their faith-based leader before considering behavioral health services. Faith-based leaders who understand the value of behavioral health services play a pivotal role in reducing stigma and increasing access to care, particularly for persons of color. Behavioral health professionals who understand spirituality as a healing factor have better outcomes of care for the people they serve. By strengthening collaboration between faith-based organizations and behavioral health services, we improve individual, family, and community health and well-being.
Negative attitudes (prejudice) and negative responses (discrimination) can compromise a person’s perception of worth and cause feelings of deep shame (stigma).
